The Lead 📬
The WNBA is set to sign a massive $2.2 billion TV deal, skyrocketing revenue from about $60 million to $200 million next season. Much of this increase is expected to boost player salaries, reducing the need for players to seek overseas opportunities in Russia or China. For instance, Caitlin Clark, the number one overall pick in this year's draft, currently makes $76,535 per year from her rookie deal. The NBA, which owns about 60% of the WNBA, has negotiated these TV deals. Despite the potential financial boost, Terri Jackson, Executive Director of the players union, is concerned that the league is still being undervalued given its recent surge in popularity. Under the new deal, WNBA games will be broadcast on network television almost every day of the week.
Jason Wright, the first Black president in NFL history, will leave the Commanders after this season. Wright joined the team in 2020 amid a name change, workplace misconduct accusations, and declining season ticket sales. He was recommended by the NFL to help rectify the issues created under former owner Dan Snyder. With new ownership led by Josh Harris and Tad Brown taking over in July 2023, Wright has navigated the team through its most challenging times.
Former MVP Russell Westbrook is reportedly heading to Denver after the Clippers agreed to a sign-and-trade deal with the Utah Jazz. He is expected to fill the role of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who moved to the Orlando Magic this offseason. However, at 35 years old, Westbrook may not attack the basket as he once did–last season Westbrook averaged a career-low 11.1 points per game.
Scoreboard 🏟️
An unlikely suspect leads headed into the second round as Brown has only finished one of the past seven tournaments he’s played in. Some notable scores are Justin Thomas at -3, Tiger at +7, Rory McIlory at +6, and Bryson DeChambeau (+5). The weather played a factor as the rain and wind made it difficult for even the worlds best. Round two starts tomorrow at 1:35 AM ET.
Dalton Knecht and Bronny James led the Lakers to victory with standout performances, scoring 20 and 13 points respectively. The Lakers have turned their season around, securing back-to-back wins after a rough 0-2 start. Their defense was impressive in the fourth quarter, where they held Cleveland to just 17 points.
Scouting Report 📺
The second half of the regular season kicks off Friday night. The Red Sox ended the first half strong, winning their last four series. Meanwhile, the Dodgers, first in the NL West, are looking to rebound after losing six of their last seven games heading into the break.
The AL-leading Guardians start the second half of the season with interleague play against the Padres. The Guardians lost four of their last five games before the break but remain in control of the American League. The Padres, tied for second in the NL West, also struggled, losing six of their last seven.
The TBT Basketball Tournament kicks off tomorrow, with the winning team taking home $1,000,000. The tournament features alumni teams from schools like UConn, Indiana, and Kentucky. The action starts today, culminating in the final on August 4th. Last year, Team Heartfire (Dayton region) won the tournament.
