The Lead 📬

Team USA started their gold medal defense with a strong performance against Serbia. Kevin Durant came off the bench to score a game-high 23 points, while LeBron James added 21 points and 9 assists. Despite Nikola Jokic's 20 points, Serbia struggled with their shooting, hitting only 24% from three compared to the USA’s impressive 56%. The U.S. starters included James, Booker, Curry, Embiid, and Jrue Holiday. Embiid was the only starter not to reach double digits. Their next game is against South Sudan on July 31st.

The U.S. Women’s National Team secured their spot in the quarterfinals with a commanding 4-1 victory over Germany. With two wins in two games, the USWNT has already ensured their advancement. Sophia Smith scored twice in the first half, while Mallory Swanson contributed a goal and an assist. The team will conclude group play against Australia on July 31st.

Simone Biles and Suni Lee have qualified for the all-around finals, marking the first time two previous gold medalists will compete against each other in this event. With gymnastics powerhouse Russia banned from competition, the U.S. holds a significant advantage heading into the finals.

Scoreboard 🏟️

Lee Kiefer and Lauren Scruggs captured gold and silver in women’s fencing. Kiefer's victory marks her second consecutive Olympic gold. An all-American fencing final has only occurred twice before, in 2008 and 1904.

Torri Huske edged out fellow American Gretchen Walsh by just 0.04 seconds to win gold in the 100m butterfly. This victory was sweet redemption for Huske, who missed medaling by 0.01 seconds in the same event at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Yankees secured back-to-back wins against the Red Sox, extending their division lead over their rival to 5.5 games. New York led from the start, scoring three runs in the first inning. These victories also bring the Yankees within one game of the Orioles in the AL East. The final series between these rivals will be in September.

Scouting Report 📺

In a rematch of the 2020 Olympic final, Team USA faces Japan. The U.S. comfortably won 90-75 in that game, claiming their ninth gold medal. This year’s team aims to continue the dominance of past U.S. teams, maintaining an unbeaten Olympic record since 1996.

Tennis legends Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, with 46 Grand Slam titles between them, meet in the second round of the Olympics. Nadal, at 38, has been battling injuries, resulting in a lower seed. Djokovic, despite his storied career, has only one Olympic medal, a bronze from 2008 when he lost to Nadal.

With Russia out of the Olympics, the stage is set for China and Japan to vie for the top spot in men’s gymnastics. China currently leads, but Japan is close behind and within striking distance. Great Britain has also secured a spot in the finals but is considered an outside contender.
