The Lead 📬
Xander Schauffele triumphed at The Open Championship, finishing at nine under par, two shots ahead of Justin Rose and Billy Horschel. Starting the day one stroke behind the leader, Schauffele fired an impressive -6 in the final round, overcoming his competitors, the course, and the challenging weather. This victory marks Schauffele's second major win this season, following his PGA Championship win at Valhalla in May. He’s the first golfer since 2018 to win two majors in a single year.
Adrian Beltré, Joe Mauer, Todd Helton, and Jim Leyland were inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday. Joe Mauer, a six-time All-Star and 2009 AL MVP, spent all 15 seasons with the Minnesota Twins. Adrian Beltré, a four-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner, played 21 seasons primarily with the Dodgers and Rangers. Todd Helton, a five-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner, spent all 17 seasons with the Colorado Rockies. Jim Leyland managed for 22 seasons, winning a World Series with the Marlins and earning three Manager of the Year awards. He was also inducted into the Pirates Hall of Fame.
Tadej Pogacar secured his third Tour de France victory, edging out defending champion Jonas Vingegaard. Pogacar, who previously won the Tour in 2020 and 2021, became the youngest rider to win the event three times at just 25 years old. This year's race concluded in Nice, as Paris prepares for the upcoming Olympics.
Scoreboard 🏟️
The Dodgers swept the Red Sox in their interleague series, capping it with a 9-6 win. The Dodgers hit six home runs, accounting for seven of their runs, including a massive shot by Shohei Ohtani out of Dodger Stadium. This marks only the second time the Red Sox has been swept in a three-game series this season.
The Seattle Mariners defeated the Houston Astros 6-4, tying them at the top of the AL West. Luke Raley’s three-run homer in the sixth inning made the difference as the Astros’ comeback fell short. Houston's Yordan Alvarez hit for the cycle in the loss, but the Astros couldn’t capitalize on their nine hits.
The Brewers held off a ninth-inning comeback from the Twins to win 8-7, marking their third consecutive victory. Rhys Hoskins' two-run homer in the eighth inning gave Milwaukee the lead, which they maintained. The game featured seven home runs, contributing to nine of the 15 runs scored. The Brewers scored eight runs in both wins of the two-game series against the Twins.
Scouting Report đź“ş
In their final Olympic tune-up, Team USA faces Germany in London. Germany, showing significant improvement, won bronze at EuroBasket 2022 and gold at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, led by New Jersey Nets guard Dennis Schroder, the FIBA World Cup MVP. Kevin Durant, dealing with a calf injury, has practiced but hasn’t played in any exhibition games.
The NBA Summer League championship is set for Monday night, with the Miami Heat facing the Memphis Grizzlies. Memphis’ Scottie Pippen Jr. notched a triple-double, while Miami’s Pelle Larsson posted 21 points, six assists, and four steals in their respective semifinal games. The Summer League is a great platform for young talent, with former MVPs including Damian Lillard, Blake Griffin, and Josh Hart.
The Reds and Braves kick off a three-game series on Monday. Atlanta, second in the NL East, hosts Cincinnati, fourth in the NL Central. Reds' expected starter Hunter Greene has allowed just nine hits in his last three starts, while Braves' expected starter Reynaldo Lopez remains undefeated in nine home starts.
