Good morning and welcome to The Warm Up! In today’s edition, we break down Mauricio Pochettino officially taking charge of the USMNT as they gear up for 2026, while the U.S. men’s team struggles to close out against New Zealand. We’ve also got all the latest action, from a thriller between the Netherlands and Germany to the Lynx extending their hot streak. Plus, don’t miss the Olympic breaker making waves, record-setting MLB moments, and a WNBA playoff preview, let’s dive in!
Mauricio Pochettino is officially the new head coach of the U.S. men’s national soccer team, taking over from Gregg Berhalter. The former Tottenham, PSG, and Chelsea boss brings a winning pedigree and a background in player development. With a resume that includes a Champions League final and Ligue 1 title, the 52-year-old Argentine is one of the most decorated coaches in USMNT history. Pochettino’s first test will be a friendly against Panama on October 12, as he looks to build a squad that can compete on the world stage ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
With Mauricio Pochettino confirmed as head coach minutes before kickoff, the USMNT faced New Zealand in Cincinnati. Christian Pulisic, doing what he does best, scored the opener in the 69th minute. But just when it looked like the U.S. would cruise to victory, a 89th-minute goal from New Zealand’s Ben Waine, courtesy of a wild deflection, leveled the game at 1-1. Despite dominating the match, the U.S. couldn’t find the back of the net again. With Pochettino now officially in charge, all eyes are on his debut on October 12 against Panama.
The Netherlands and Germany put on a show in a 2-2 Nations League draw in Amsterdam. The Dutch struck first just 100 seconds in, with Tijjani Reijnders slotting home after a perfect pass from Ryan Gravenberch. Germany responded with goals from Deniz Undav and Joshua Kimmich to take a 2-1 lead by halftime. The second half saw Denzel Dumfries level the score for the Dutch, but the teams couldn’t find a winner.
The Minnesota Lynx extended their winning streak to four with a 76-64 victory over the Atlanta Dream. Kayla McBride led the charge with 15 points, while Napheesa Collier and Bridget Carleton added 14 each. The Lynx gradually built their lead, outscoring the Dream 22-16 in the third quarter and maintaining control throughout the fourth. Allisha Gray led Atlanta with 17 points, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Lynx, who now sit at 27-9 with four games left in the regular season.
