📬 49ers Roll Jets 🚀 | Guardians Take Down White Sox 💥 | Today: USMNT vs New Zealand ⚽
Sports news in 5 minutes.
Good morning and welcome to The Warm Up! In today’s edition, we’re breaking down how Jordan Mason’s breakout performance helped the 49ers trample the Jets, plus a look at some standout MLB action with the Guardians and Yankees both grabbing big wins. You’ll also get caught up on the latest college football rankings and wild moments from yesterday's games, along with the Minnesota Lynx's playoff chase and the USMNT's showdown against New Zealand, let’s dive in!
The San Francisco 49ers stomped the New York Jets in their Week 1 clash, securing a 32-19 win behind a monster performance from third-year running back Jordan Mason. Filling in for the injured Christian McCaffrey, Mason racked up 147 yards on 28 carries, averaging a solid 5.3 yards per carry, and even snagged a touchdown for good measure. Meanwhile, Brock Purdy had 231 passing yards, while kicker Jake Moody was perfect, nailing all six of his field goals.
The Niners controlled the clock, hogging the ball for over 38 minutes and scoring on eight straight possessions. On the other side, Jets QB Aaron Rodgers, back after his four-play Achilles disaster last season, threw for 167 yards with a touchdown and a pick, but couldn’t save New York’s lifeless offense. With just 68 rushing yards and too many dropped passes, the Jets were outmatched.
Joey Cantillo brought the heat, pitching seven nearly flawless innings for his first major league win as the Cleveland Guardians took down the Chicago White Sox, 5-3. Cantillo was flirting with perfection until Andrew Benintendi broke it up with a 7th inning single. The 24-year-old struck out 10 batters in his best outing yet. David Fry and Bo Naylor provided the firepower, each knocking one out of the park to help Cleveland maintain their AL Central lead. On the other side, it’s another day, another loss for the White Sox, now sitting at 33-112 and nearing the infamous 120-loss mark.
The Yankees got their mojo back, thanks to Austin Wells, who launched a go-ahead 3-run homer in the 7th, leading New York to a 10-4 rout of the Royals. Wells wasn’t done, tacking on an RBI double in the 8th as the Yanks tallied their 13th double-digit run game of the season. Aaron Judge’s bat may be homerless in 13 games, but his clutch single tied things up just before Wells’ bomb. On the Royals’ side, Salvador Perez tried to play spoiler, going 4-for-4 with a homer and 3 RBIs, but Kansas City’s lead crumbled in the late innings. Yankees now sit 1.5 games ahead in the AL East.
The Red Sox smacked the Orioles around Fenway Park with a 12-3 win, thanks to a career night from Rob Refsnyder. The right fielder went 4-for-4, blasting two homers and driving in four RBIs to power Boston. Brayan Bello shrugged off an early run to settle down, as Boston cruised to their 73rd win, while the Orioles took another hit in their playoff push.

The USMNT faces off against New Zealand in an international friendly, with the Americans holding a 2-0-1 lead in the all-time series. With both teams recovering from recent losses, expect a competitive exhibition before the players return to club duty.
Germany and the Netherlands square off in a Nations League battle, with both sides coming off 5-goal wins in their last game. Germany, in a post-EURO 2024 rebuild, is led by a youthful trio of Musiala, Wirtz, and Havertz. The Dutch will be eyeing Germany's relative inexperience, leaning on players like Xavi Simons and new Man United signing Joshua Zirkzee to control the tempo. Expect a tactical midfield battle and no shortage of drama in this classic rivalry.
The Minnesota Lynx have clinched another playoff spot, sitting comfortably at No. 2 in the standings, while the Atlanta Dream scramble for the final spot. Atlanta’s Rhyne Howard has been on fire, dropping 36 points in a recent overtime loss and becoming the third WNBA player to score 30+ points with four 3-pointers in three consecutive games.
